2007 STATUS: Well before Al Gore brought the world's attention to our global sustainability challenges and well before Facebook became 'all the rage', The Australian National Sustainability Network was an early effort to use the power of social networking and online communities to bridge institutional, geographic and social boundaries in order to help build a more sustainable and participatory society. The pilot network went live in August 2004 using cutting-edge online community technology and eventually grew to more than a thousand sustainability practitioners and enthusiasts. As is often the case with cutting-edge technology, there were technical challenges and much time was spent working on these. Also as a pre "Inconvenient Truth" initiative, the [non-profit] project had difficulty attracting sufficient funds to take it through a formal launch and growth phase. In late 2005 - after having donated substantial time and effort - the main driver of the project was offered a position at Europe's leading social networking site. The lessons learned during the sustainability network pilot have, however, not been lost and members will be informed if and when a suitable replacement technology is found. The network as it stands will either be formally closed or will continue for some time in its current 'bare-bones' format - which some members still find very useful for connecting with other members that share their interests. Those with an existing account can still log-in until further notice. New memberships are no longer being accepted.
